In either case the pistons will need to be changed.
I'd like to update my '54 322 to '56 specs. My books seem to indicate that valve sizes were not increased until '57. Is this so? If this is the case, will 364 heads fit? I was under the impression that '53 -'54 heads were the same and '55 and '56 head valve sizes were changed.
Thanks for your help!
Gary

Hi Gary,
I did a 54 264 -> 56 322 swap which may be slightly related to what you are doing.
The facts I know are that the 264 heads swap with 322s, 56 engines have different lifters and rods for apparantly higher lift and just about everything can swap from the 54/56s with some caution to the lifters which are longer in 56, thusly the stock lifters & rods should be kept. When I ordered the lifters, the 56 lifters were different from the other 322s and cost a bit more. I thought the 264 heads may give me a bit more compression so I used them. I'm now a bit afraid my engine has too much torque and may grenade my transmission. Gotta keep a gentle touch to the pedal .
cheers,
Chris

It's good to see you on the forum.
Have you found a Century tranny yet?

A word of caution is in store for those who may not know. 1955 & earlier had steel cams. Along with this were different lifters & ALSO the distributor gear. The '55 engine can be boosted to '56 HP levels by using the '56 rods & pistons.
I also have a stick set-up from a '56/322 Century. Flywheel, bellhousing, clutch fork & a 6 bolt top cover trans. I drove the car for the most part of a year with an absolutely quiet & properly working trans. if anyone may be interested. Not for the faint of heart, but then again it's a buy & bolt-in proposition.

Gary, if you have an Automatic crank a bushing will be needed. As for the stick set-up, 1K.

Thanks Tom. I have a friend that may have an interest. I'll let him know.
I have a crank adapter from Russ that allows the use of a '64 T400 on a '63 or earlier 401. And for a stupid question, would something like this work?
Thanks!
Gary
