    Engine ID

I have a nailhead that I believe is a 264 or 322 and would like to figure out which.

    The engine number is I3074204

    Head castings are 1166349-4
    1166349-3

the engine code stamping is the best thing to find.

wander around the reference section for a bit. there's a lot of good stuff in there.

    Bob,

The info there shows no engine code for early nailheads. The serial numbers listed do not match with what I have. All serial numbers listed for the early nailheads start with a V while mine starts with an upper case i. Also there is no -# to indicate the series, hence the displacement.

No one seems to be able to explain this. This motor is for sure a nailhead and is bolted up to a Dynaflow. The casting numbers on the heads indicate 264 - 322 54-56 so no help there. There is a simple pully on the crank (no harmonic damper) so I believe that indicates a 264 or '54 322?

1953 - 50 & 70 series (V-8) stamped on the top outer edge of the left cylinder bank, between the middle branches of the exhaust manifold.

1954 - 1956 - Stamped on a machined surface on the top outer edge of the left cylinder bank, between the middle branches of the exhaust manifold.

I think the stamped number is the engine serial #.

What I am looking for is the casting # and should be cast into the block somewere.
