the first series 40(special) defroster air valve is operated by a knob marked "DEFROST" located below center of instrument panel: the defrost blower is controlled by a switch marked "BLOWER" mounted on the radio speaker grill. On later series 40 the defroster air valve control and blower switch are combined in one unit mounted on the radio speaker grill. Pulling out the knob marked "DEFROST" opens the air valve. Turning the knob clockwise turns on the defrost blower.

we had a 50 special 4dr. when I was a kid. I remember the racket that the leaves and gum wrappers made when we fired up the underseat heater for the first time every winter and that blower motor came on.

There's quite a few differences, but they not always early or late series. I have a late series interior (single defroster switch and map light is part of the headlight switch). My hood is 1st series or it has a "key" that fits in one of the portholes instead of the cables.
