don't you already have a return line? from the carb? i might gauge up the existing return line to make sure it could handle the extra fuel pressure at idle. it wouldn't hurt to test the engine for a 5 minute run or so just to make sure it's not overpowering the float or something.

    the fuel pump?

no i wouldn't do that. we're trying to maximize fuel pressure at the float seat under open throttle conditions.

    the new pump

the new pump has the hole for the return, it is not threaded, and is just a blank. the instructions say to drill and tap it if your are running a return. with the old pump i had the return blocked off.

i was just not wanting to take the pump back off unless i had too. i know guys who run a restricted return, and thats what i was thinking of, since the fitting that came with the pump has a .030 hole in it.

one other thing, dirt is packing up around the dipstick. is there a longer dipstick setup i could get. (a tube that presses into the block and a longer dipstick)?

    thanks for your help

    Dipstick

I have only seen a tube setup once. It was on a '73 Electra that I parted out many years ago. Hit the salvage yards. There out there, you just gotta find one.
