Thread: Carb issues

  1. Carb issues

I got a 52 super and I need some tips on tuning the carb, it has been rebuilt but the car runs really rich. The choke appears to be working correctly. The motor is completely stock with the original carb. The only adjustment I see on it is the 2 screws in the base. Any help would be great thanks.

Make sure the float is set at the right depth and that it is not sticking. Also make sure the needle and seat is working properly and is not being overpowered by too much fuel pressure. The latter is usually caused by an add on electric fuel pump that is not regulated properly. Good luck.

what adjustments did you do to the 2 screws at the base?
if nothing. turn them to the right until it stops. then turn them 1 to 1 and a half turns around. that should be about right. if its rebuilt, i would hope the guy wouldve know how to set the other parts so all youd have to do is adjust it.

Why do you think it is running rich?

Could it be that you mechanical and/or your vacuum advance is stuck? Check that your advances in your distributor are working. Most carb/milage problems I have seen are solved in the distributor!

this would be the carter WCD correct? as i recall, its a mechanical linkage for the mixture with a power valve. is it running rich at idle? thsoe two little screws only control the idle mixture. biggest problem after rebuild is improper float level. id check the idle adjustment first, use LowBlowJoe's instructions for this. whats the stock float level for the carb? too high a level will cause a rich mixture, too low it runs lean. this will show up most at half throttle under load (a lot of smoke for rich, gutless and stumbling for too lean--low power for both). my bets on the idle adjustment--though could be vacuum hoses, stuck power valve, distributor... would check in that order after idle and float level.

  6. Thanks!!!

Thanks for all your guys help. In addition to these things I found that the exhaust flappy deal was stuck in the wrong position and it had an intake leak which upon fixing really helped it run better. I wish I had found this web site sooner. Thanks again!!!!
