    Removing the Rocker shaft

Anyone have a tech on how to remove the rocker shaft and clean out oil passages? I'm stuck on how to remove the shaft. It seems to be in there pretty good and I dont want to damage anything. I've seen a couple threads on this but no one really gives a clear explanation on how to remove the shaft.

Also, my manual says nothing on this.

    Thanks,

    Lee

Simply unbolt the stands and lift the assembly off of the engine. If you disassemble the shaft, keep everything in order and don't mix up the arms, springs and stands.

Cleaning it out sucks big time. You need to remove the small plugs on either end (they're about one inch in diameter). Plus, removing the rocker arms and stands takes time and muscle. When you're done, you'll find that many of the rockers and/or shaft is scored. I bought a nice used one from Wheatbelt Buick that had minimal wear on it for my rebuilt engine. I decided that 45 bucks and a little time was better than 475 for a rebuilt. I used a 12 gauge shotgun cleaning kit to clean the shaft out. I used a small drill bit (not in a drill) to clean the rocker arm passages...Be prepared to use a lot of carb cleaner. Be prepared to get very dirty. I got mine done in about 2 days. Good luck!

    rocker arms

Yes its messy but it can be done at home. First check for galling on the shaft. Slide the rocker arms over to one side to examine. If its galled or badly worn then don,t bother with it, send it to 'rocker arms specialists'. It isnt cheap but its not out of line for what is done. rocker arm/assemblies are the first place to have oiling problems, and wear. They have to be repaired properly and as I understand they will repair your complete assembly, better than new.
