On a completely stock motor 4.10 is far too much gear and 3.73 would be questionable . Probably a 3.42 would be a good choice with the stock engine . Are you planning any engine mods , if so you might be able to stand a little more gear .
i have a stock all original 2 door skylark,350 engine and trans. but i want to upgrade my gears to make it a street/strip car. what would be the best gear to go with 411,410's,373 or what? also would i need a limited slip posi upgrade since its only one legger now to make it get better traction?

I think its kind like do you want to give protity to street or strip.
Dual purpose doesn't work very well. you'll just have to run one and when it your not happy with it, move up or down a bit. Yes, you want a pose.

I think the 3.42 is a perfect street/strip gear for a Buick GS. Of course it depends a lot on your build, tire size. etc. But for a 14" rim and standard tire with a moderate cam and mild head porting with headers a 3.42 would be more than enough. I like the 3.73 geard on my SS but it is a big block car with more than 500 rwhp & a Muncie 4spd; but it is not too much fun on drives more than 10-15miles at highway speeds. My Z28 has a SBC that makes more than 425hp with a Muncie 4spd and has a 4.10. It is very quick out of the hole but a real pain to drive more than 65mph for extended periods. My 71 GS 350/TH350 made 430hp & 425ft-lb @ 4750rpm on the motor dyno and has 15" rims with 28" tall tires and a 3.42 posi. It is my favorite car to take out for a spin.

just put an Auburn posi and a Richmond 3.90.
it's great for the track but with the th350 it turns
3000rpm@60mph, 4000rpm@80mph, you get the idea.
i drive it a lot in town and love it, track love it,
los angeles freeway a little to much when you want to speed.
3.90 is a tall gear for a 3 speed automatic.
you should just throw a r700 in there and go with a 4.11.
I would agree 3.42 probably best choice for all around (without other major mods) I just put a set in my 70 skylark from a 2.56 more fun to drive
mileage sufferd about 2mpg but I cant keep my foot out of it (new toy) also dropped et 8 tenths
I am planning on running a 29in tall tire in my 72 GS. it has a 350/th350. I am looking for a posi unit to put in it and I was wondering what gearing would be best. I am just adding headers for now, maybe a mild cam. Would the 3:42 be too much or too little.

The parts for the 71-up 8.5's are the same for vehicles up into the 80's and 90's. Plentiful,plus cheaper. I would suggest the best gear you as well as the thread starter get are 3.23 or 3.42's. Any lower gear(numerically higher number) will hurt the fun factor as well as mileage. I have a 462 in my racecar I am building and I have 30 spline posi,axles and a 3.90 gear set. In my opinion, unless you race only your car,there is no need for a 4 series rear gear,unless you have a 700R OD trans.
