    Freeze Plugs

    Guys, I have a bad Freeze Plug, I ordered a set from Bobs Buick but they are too large. When I called Bob he stated oh you have those engines but didn't have a size for me or a recommendation on where to go.

    Currently I have two 263 engines and I need freeze plug sets. Bob stated during mid year they had a block with different sizes. Any ideas, I can MIC the hole size and get a number.

    Last time I needed freeze plugs I got 'em at a local auto parts (not one of those 'me too' stores, a real one from years ago: NAPA, etc.). Put a bead of form-a-gasket around the edge, though, before installing.

    I second that...I can't remember the exact size, but it's not terribly obscure...Punch one out and take it to the parts store...They're easy to get out. Just put a slightly smaller socket up to it and hammer it in to the water jacket. Then you can grab it with a pair of pilers and pull it out...there's nowhere for it to go once it's inside the engine.

    I learned to NEVER put ANY form of "gasket glue" or even anything on freeze plugs!
    They can pop out just for the reason of being "lubricated!

    Guys thanks for the info, I just started taking the old plug out and the center came apart but the ring is still stuck in the block. Any ideas on how I can knock out the rig part of the plug. I've tried a slot screwdriver and dead blow but it will not move. This sucker is stuck in the block, I've never had this much trouble.

    sounds like a job for a steady hand, a careful eye, and a dremel.

    Be sure to NOT cut in your engineblock, if you do, you will have major problems!
    I would go with a hacksaw blade, very carefully, and cut about half the thickness of the plugs edge and then use a screwdriver and hammer, try to break the plug invards the hole in the block.

    In response to the 'never put anything around the freeze plug', I put all the freeze plugs in a 1937 Dodge without gasket sealer and they all leaked! I had to pull half of the thing apart again. Then I put a small amount of gasket sealer completely around the OD of all of the plugs and they didn't leak! When gasket sealer sets up, it ain't a lubricant.

    Talking Dremel Tool

    I was working with the Dremel tool, but it's hard to get into the space. I've bee hammering away trying to break the freeze plug in half. These plugs are stuck so I'm going to keep hammering away. I've never used any gasket sealer on the plugs they usually just pop in and seal themselves. Well back to the hammer and slot!
