I recently purchased a 1949 Super in great shape and want to use it as a serious driver. It has a standard trans and I prefer an automatic. I drove a 1952 Roadmaster with Dynaflow a couple of weeks ago and I was disappointed with the first generation Dynaflow. My Dad had a 1956 Super and I recall that its transmission was improved and I think it had a passing gear. Was there a meaningful improvement in the Dynaflow between 1949 and 1955/56? Looking at other threads I see that the 55/56 also had a torque tube suspension. Assuming the 1955/56 Dynaflow is improved I am wondering if it can easily be adapted to the 1949 torque tube. If so, can it also be adapted to the STR 8? If it can easily be adapteed to the torque tube and not the STR 8 I will consider installing a nailhead with its Dynaflow. I prefer not to adapt a modern overdrive transmission if I have to change to an open drive shaft system.
