Unless you have a lot of money and extra time you might as well put a small block chevy in there. You can get all the parts and even speed equipment right down at the corner parts house!
Hi there guys...
For the first time i am a buick owner....I really like the car but i want to have a v8 under the hood....
Now i was thinkin about replace the str8 engine with a v8 in my 1950 buick special.....
What do u recomend me to do... is there any shortcuts....
Does the nailhead engine maybe fit with some minor modifications...
Or is there any custom engine mounts avilable on the market for even newer v8:s....
Pls give me something to work on....
Christian

Hey Christian,
Congratulaions on acquiring the '50 Buick! I have been pondering the v8 swap for my '51 Roadmaster but the cost for a rebuild kit for a nailhead is high and you still have moderate power but they look great. A later than '66 big block buick motor is what I am considering but a new crate Chevy motor with a warranty is still a good idea. I am planning to change the front clip to a 2nd generation trans am and that will allow for more modern braking and handling. Your rear end can be changed out to a mid '80's camaro with a three link, the rear spring perch even lines up. A friend of mine did these suspension changes to his '50 special and the car runs and drives great! A lot of Buick guys here would disagree but it's your car, make yourself happy!
Google : (Jyrki's buick site.) The june 2002 entry shows how he put a camaro rearend under his buick
you can almost bolt in a 55 with a dynaflow to your rearend, or go with a floorshift early stick transmission, would be a nice setup.
