    Angry alternator

my alternator light come on and my battery died. i replaced it and the light did not go off. i replaced the battery and still no charge. i replaced the voltage regulator on the firewall and replaced the positive battery cable and the light went out but the altenator still does not charge. i did some research and found that the new altenator had an internal regulator so i returned it and got another without an internal regulator and still no light but the altenator does not charge. can some one please give me a clue as to why???

    Thumbs up beg to differ

i took the car to the shop and the found a broken wire that shorted out the new voltage reg. but believe me, you can buy altenators with the old (square) plugs that have an internal reg.i bought three of them. in 1973 they went to internal reg. with a rectangle plug. thanks of the advice though.

Unfortunately I can't help you with your problem, but maby you can help with mine. I need the alternator without the regulator and don't know the part # if it's the same as yours. Mine is a 350 , 4 barl without Ac.

The part # is 1011738, and I purchased it on line at NOVASTAR. If I remember right it was novastar.com. Good luck.

    you know the answer

10SI or 12SI--they will fit where your old did

    NO more voltage regulator-problems.

If you want your idiot light to work, wire the the brown wire to a 12V sensing wire on the INTERNALLY regulated alternator

skip those old crappy externally regulated alternators, unless you're into concours-level cars (as in, why have a 6V system in some old car, when 12V is so much better?)

and since this thread got brought up again,i strongly disagree with this statement.the plugs are completelly different between internal & externall regulator, unless this poster is refering to some "custom" alternator.and GM switched in mid 1972 btw,so depending on production date you could have either. And if you REALLY want some useless alternator info, pontiac had internal regulators on SOME big car big blocks back in 1969,Gran Prix models only if i remember,(its been a while)with rear window defogger.....trust me,ive been an alternator rebuilder since 1978.
