HA! Ina word, no. Str8 bell housing and nailhead housing are different, and you don't want to missplace that 53 str8 bell housing either! Thats a one year only item and it allows you to bolt up any dyna up to 57, 56-7 being the best, to any str8. alleycat

Ina, I thought the bellhousing bolt pattern from'57-'66 was different than the '53-'56 bellhousing by about an inch???

Waita minit! I was cornfuzed but now I arn't! We have a 51 with a str8 in it, a 53 322 with no home and trans, can we put the 53 322 in front of the 51 dyna? Still, no. Even if it would bolt up, the early dynas are a low stall, small turbine trans made for not much power. The power of a 322 would make the early trans act like a high stall trans and it would "slip" forever. Unfortunatly, there is just no saving the early trans and the boys at buick knew that too, thus the big change in 53.

Tom, your right! Except that we don't use the V8 bell housing. The 53 str8 housing is bigger for the bigger, new style torque converter. So any V8 dyna trans will bolt up by just changing the bell housing, cause there the same size, and in some cases, tail shaft parts. The 56-7 trans are the best but some time in 57, probably early on, the converter changed to pressed steel and bolted togather with the bolts going into the ring gear and squishing everything up. As a result the str8 starter won't engage the new ring gear, other wise, even the later dynas would go in but there is no real advantage in trying to use the dynas from 57-ish on because there is no real improvements from then on except on the flight pitch which won't bolt up at all and is so rare that ya can't get one anyhow. Aww-heck, you knew all this anyhow, I was so unsettled by someone wanting to change out a 263 str8 (the best one!) for....fffffor...a V8? Shucks...I'm still upset....I gotta go take some pills......alleycat

ok! i forgot to mention that the 322 still has the dyna atached to it ,so will that make things much easier...? will the 53 dyna atache right on to the 51 shaft
