The air pump is used to add air to the exhaust to help cool the cat. converter temps. without the AIR pump the converter can over heat and melt down ( the material in the converter ) and clog the exhaust sys.

I posted this question here on another thread..maybe I posted it in the wrong place. Anyway, I would like to remove my belt off of the smog pump. By doing this, will it affect the operation of the motor? I live in NH and We don't need the pump. The car is not a daily driver, so it's not like I'm going to be polluting "green earth"!
Thnx.,

Got my answer/s. Thank you.
...all done here.........
The main purpose of the smog pump was to add some oxygen to the unburned fuel and then burn it in the exhaust manifold.
Some of the smog is created when unburned fuels escape into the atmosphere and then are heated by the sun. If engines were 100% efficient (which they are not) it would equal no smog from car engines. In the case of the smog pump it really wasn't a bad idea because it did help burn some of the fuel not burned by the motor, helping with a more complete combustion for anti-smog purposes.
If you decide not to use the smog pump on your car hang on to it because restoration shops are paying big bucks for them today. Back in the old days everyone would take them off and toss them. That's why they are so rare today.
