A filter gets plugged by rust, dirt and scale from the tank and line. If you fill up at a station that sells a lot of fuel you shouldn't worry. If you let the tank go low often, the tank may start rusting due to condensation.
A new filter won't hurt.
Have not ever changed fuel filter on my 87 Buick Lesabre. Car runs great. Every now and then I put in a bottle of injector cleaner thru it. Car has 164.000 miles. Do I need to really change the filter Thanks!

Just had a friend of mine change the filter at his shop. Got lucky came off pretty easy. I think a couple days of PB blaster and liquid wrench helped Filter was original, and very dirty black specs and dirty gas. Should be good for awhile. Thanks beatlebuick for the reply
