    Nailhead to turbo 400 question...

    I'm building a 29 T with a 1964 401 Nailhead. I got the engine along with a Turbo 400 transmission from a guy who said they were a great combination. He said the trick was to get a later crank shaft and that would make the combination work without an expensive adapter. He included a crankshaft that he said would work (and was the hard-to-find "trick" to the whole setup). I'm wondering if anyone knows what I'm talking about. I bolted the tranny to the engine without a torque converter and they mate perfectly, but what is the deal with that other crank? The tail end of the crank is different from the one in the engine, but I don't have a flexplate so I don't know if that is what makes it work. If anyone has any knowledge of what I'm talking about I'd appreciate the info/help. Like I said, I don't have a flex plate and I need a torque converter so any info on what I need for those would be great too. Thanks!

    If you have a 64 401, the ST400 trans will fit . The earlier 401s were for the dynaflow. If you get a flex plate for the 64 engine and an ST 400 you will see what you need. It may be that the engine you have is an earlier engine and he gave you a 64 crank to make the combination work.

    The crank in my 62 Buick was changed to a later unit and the 400 bolted right up. I had to use a 64 401 starter also as the drive is different for the early engines.

    If you measure the end of the crank where the flex plate bolts on you will find the early crank is larger and you would have to cut the hole in the flex plate larger to make it fit.
