A couple years ago I read that the metallurgy used in the hydraulic lifter camshaft and the hydraulic lifters themselves was vastly DIFFERENT from the metallurgy used in the earlier solid lifter cams and lifters. As a result (the article warned) the GM earlier solid lifters should never be used in combination with a cam core that came originally as a hydraulic lifter cam, even if it is reground to solid lifter profile.
Does anyone have any good information that would either confirm or deny this?
It has serious implications. What it says is that if a performance regrind is desired, and if the engine is to run solid lifters, then a pre '48 cam core should be used. Is this a myth?
