Oil Filter

I have a 72 455 Buick, not sure what it came out of. The oil filter on it is a WIX 51042, much smaller than what is supposed to be on there. I looked up this part number on the WIX website and this part number fits buick 3.8 v6 through 4.9 v8. So, I'm thinking someone must have swapped the oil filter mount from a much smaller engine. Will this hurt the performance and oiling capability of my motor? Thanks

highly doubtful. keep in mind that as long as the filter will spin onto the threads and the rubber seal will match up you can put practically anything on there.

we were running a filter on our race 455 that was at least 50% larger than the 'book' filter ... i forget what that # was though.

anywho, get the 'book' filter and see if it mates up. if it does you're all good, no worries. a smaller filter would just give you extra pressure loss between the inlet and outlet sides of the filter.
