    ignition key cylinder problem

I've had this problem since I bought my 71 skylark, in that every so often I turn the key to shut the car off, and not only does the car remain on... but I can take the key out - but, heres where it gets bad... I can turn the car off, but I have to wrench the key into the "resistance zone", about 15 - 30 degrees past what should turn the car off... at this point the ignition and everything turns off... but I can't get the key out. I turn the key back to the "lock" position... and my idiot lights turn on

If anyone has had this problem, or better yet, knows how to fix it I'd be MUCHO abliged as I have my car & battery on charger life support

    thanks guys!

Sounds like your ing. switch needs to be adjusted . The switch is on top of your steering column .
You will need to unbolt the steering column to get to
    the screws for adjustment .
It might be best to buy a new ing. switch ( $20 to $30 )before you start . HTH

believe it or not... I finally got up into the column, and sure enough the switch, and pushrod were in good condition, but the nylon gear on the end of the lock cylinder was TOTALLY screwed, missing teeth... a crack, a chip on the keyway - Bad stuff - they don't produce the part any more, so I ran around to some junkyards in the area and to my luck... a 72' lark and lo and behold... intact tilt steering column (an upgrade), and as a bonus the instrument cluster, I.P, and dash pad were F.L.A.W.L.E.S.S
