    425 is a big block isn't it??

I thought for sure a 425 was a big block...especially because of the torque numbers.
A "friend" of mine is trying to convince me it is a small block.

    Please settle an argument.
    Thanks,

i thought the Nailheads were kind of like the Pontiac blocks ... the same size externally whether you were talking about a 264 or a 425? i suppose the 264 might have a shorter deck but i've never seen that mentioned.

if you look it up in an engine history book they usually show Buick big blocks as being the 400, 430 and 455 from 1967-1976. small blocks are the 215, 300, 340 and 350 from 1961-1981. the earlier Nailheads are their own designation from 1966 back to 1953.

Nailheads come in 3 sizes, 264/322,364,&401/425. The difference is in the deck height. You can tell by the bolt spread accross the intake manifold. Basically the are all the same in length and width.

The terms "big block", "small block" do not simply apply across brands, and really means nothing. Most people hear them from the Chevy crowd to refer to the smaller 283-400 series v-8 or the bigger 396-454 series. It simply refers to their relative physical size.
