Thread: 56 Oil filter?

    56 Oil filter?

I recently bought a '56 Buick Century 4dr HT 322 Nailhead V8. Anybody have any idea where I can find an oil filter to fit? I ordered a filter from Fram (CH106PL), but I'm not sure if it fits correctly as I am leaking oil in a fairly continuous stream.

    Help?!

    Hey There Left from Salt!

I see that You are a NEW MEMBER

    WELCOME ABOARD!

    I am also a proud owner of a '56

Your '56 uses a pretty common oil filter for the Era. Like most GM's it uses an A/C P 122. It is a perferated metal canister with a gasket. Not much variation or diversification in size. It is the one size fits all.

Most parts houses can get their hands on one but you will probably have to order one in advance and have it in a day or two.

Personnally I do not use Fram Filters. They have a high failure rate.

An improper sized filter will cause the problems you are experiencing.

    Hope this HELPS! You out.

The most common problem with a cannister type filter leaking is that the gasket has been improperly installed or not replaced. The sealing gasket for the bolt was not replaced or the cannister was improperly installed. If the cannister was put in ****-eyed the bolt could have gotten bent. You will have to check this all out before you will not have an oil leak from the filter. Of course there are many more places where oil could be leaking. Ask Iddie.
