Jim,
A similiar problem is being discussed with a 64 Wildat under the thread 64 Starts but will not run why. Try some of this advice before you go changing the switch.....
I'm having trouble with the ignition in my 65 Riviera. When I turn the key the engine cranks and fires, but will only run if I keep the key turned all the way to the right. If I release it to the on position, the engine stalls. I'm thinking that this sounds like a problem with the ignition switch. Has anyone else had this problem, and what is the best way to handle it? Can the switch be fixed or does it need to be replaced?

The Buick has a wire from the solenoid that feeds 12 volts to the distributor for starting. When the key is released , the ignition is fed either by a reisitor wire or a resistor. Whichever you have has gone bad. Check your manual for the schematic. The resistor ,if you have one is a white ceramic unit on the firewall.
