Yes you can. It will add about 10HP. One caution, you must check piston-valve clearance. There wasn't a lot of it before '56.

OK...I read that interchange is acceptable on valve train components such as rockers, shafts, etc between a '55 322 and later, say mid '60's, nailheads, but is there any other component change affected that will require change/mod or ??? if said change is made? I've got a '55 322 that I am in the process of putting back together and have a late model rocker set with the pads on the rockers. Will the geometry of these (if used) require that I change pushrods, lifters or my mind? Or should I sell these suckers and opt for a new stock set and be done with it? I believe the difference is going to land between 1.5 and 1.6 lift or thereabouts and it should not make that much a difference with hydraulics...I am thinking. But then again...I am asking, so I am really not sure.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have seen and collected Chevy bent pushrods before and have sets of valve stamped pistons from my childhood. Don't want any more such collectables.

Gordon
