Thread: LeSabre cross reference....

    LeSabre cross reference....

Before you read this, I am new to Buicks......
I am starting the evaluation on the 61 LeSabre my daughter just had to have. The motor is seized, and it looks like rebuilding it will blow her budget. I have the cahnce to pick up a 62 leSabre that runs for a reasonable price. It also has a 364 Nailhead and Dynaflow tranny. Here is the part I don't know.... are they the same motor and tranny? I know they went through several changes in their lives, and I don't want to mess with it if it won't bolt right in. Thanks for the help....

    heh.

my books say that the 61 Le Sabre was only available with a 364 and the 62 Le Sabre was only available with the 401.

maybe my books are wrong ... or maybe somebody blew up the 401 in the 62 and replaced it with the 364 ... or maybe the owner is confused.

whatever, the 364 and 401 are both Nailhead engines although the 401 has both a larger bore AND stroke than the 364. externally they mount the same and you should be able to swap many parts between the engines. if the 62 actually has a 364 instead of a 401, so much the better.

Basically, & I say basically, everything is a bolt-in. Problem is the '61/364 & 401 have rear sump pans. In '62 they started with center sump pans. All '62's came with 401's. Problem is that you can't just remove the pan from one & transfer to the other, although they will physically fit you can't swap the oil pumps or screens as they are different. I do have screens made up just for this purpose or you can try & find a rear sump pickup screen from a '65-'66 Skylark GS. Other than this little issue they are a bolt-in swap. Would you be interested in my '61 LeSabre. I'm asking $7500.00. By the time your finished with the '61 you have it sounds like you will have more than this amount of $$$ into it. Just a thought,
