Thanks for the replies guys.
I feel more at ease now.
So far all my data gathering has been in the driveway.
I hope to get this beast on the road this weekend (barring any other issues.) I'll let...
Conroy,
Congrats on getting the pan off.
As for the plastic pieces, could they be off the timing gear?
Mine had stress cracks and looked like it was on its last leg.
I had gray metallic...
I just had may 425 nailhead completely rebuilt. I have been following my rebuilder's engine break-in procedure/advice and am being perhaps a little over cautious along the way. After I fired the...

Conroy,
Sorry, but I don't think I can answer your question. When I pulled my pan I had a hoist connected and lifted it from above. My hunch is that it would be ok but I can't say for sure. ...
Thanks Steve
I appreciate the advice!

Conroy,
I cut and pasted some instructions below that were written by Tom Telesco that I found on another forum. This is what I followed when I dropped my pan. I added my own editorial comments...
Anyone know if a 64 Riviera 425 requires gaskets under the exhaust manifold to head junction?
Mine did not have them installed originally when I tore it down.
But the gasket set I bought has them...

Springs
Gaskets

I was a bit over optimistic about my estimate to complete. Still not done so I can't give you a final cost yet. But to this point I have ~$500 labor and ~$600 parts. One thing I found out...
I have my 425 torn down and noticed a groove on the crankshaft counterweight just above the oil pump. The patina on the groove makes it look like it was freshly cut. But there was nothing obvious...
Conroy,
The tapping was always there but was most noticeable at idle. Under load, it was barely detectable.
I just pulled the engine and dropped it off for a rebuild last week. Hopefully will...
Conroy,
Are you making any headway with your tapping problem?
I was following your thread as I have a similar problem with my 425.
I posted my attempts to remedy my problem back in Sept of last...
Thanks for the reply Tom
I wasn't going for the hardened valve seats.
This is just going to be a Sunny Sunday runner so I didn't see the need for them.
Re: valve guides - I've heard these...
Can anyone direct me to a source for replacement valves with oversized valve stems for a 425 nailhead? Machine shop said this was a better way to go for worn guides as opposed to sleeving. However...
Thanks for the advice Guyopel!
Can anyone give me any advice on this problem?
I have a 425 nailhead that is tapping on the #2 cylinder.
The car sat on blocks for 20 yrs before I bought it.
Supposedly it was fired up regularly....
