Thanks for the info people! I have solved the problem (last summer) traced it to an add-on electric choke that was feeding power back to my coil and ignition switch. Ripped it out, problem gone!

I looked in my manual as well but no luck. Another good place to post your question is on the Buick Club of America site. Those who know old Buicks are found there!
