u must have swapped the trans to late model.
they do make power steering fluid in the chemical section of your auto parts dept. it's a little more expensive, but no worry.

u did check the idler arm and center link to make sure they aren't worn-out?
also if u have excessive play in the steering, the worm gear is probably badly worn. u might as well start looking...

did u get it cranked and running well ??
