May want to check the pick up tube in the tank, they often have a "sock" filter on the end that can clog up. sometimes i could go 7 or 8 miles before it would die, then when the pressure was drained...

Sorry took so long to reply, but when I did my 66 skylark, I took the old ring and sending unit over to NAPA and they had a large supply of o rings for sending units and matched one up and has worked...
