oil pan gasket
Attachment 6957
Gents,
I just cleaned out the oil pan of my 55 century (322), which was very succesfull. But while cleaning what was left over of the previous gasket, I came across this hole. It is situated on the front under the passengers side. Is it supposed to be like this or is there something missing to plug this hole?

That hole has given me fits in the past. It was probably made as an access hole for some machine work further up and originally had a plug in it. If the engine has been rebuilt the machine shops will remove all plugs, but not replace this one since it looks so insignificant. Two problems: a column of engine oil will sit on top of the gasket; the gasket in this area does not have a very good sealing surface...result is an oil leak that is hard to pin point and fix! If you can measure it carefully a machine shop should have proper plug. I just pounded in a tapered wooden dowel.

Oil pan gasket
This is some solid advice, I will machine a plug. I was indeed worried that this would create new leaks in the future. Thanks again
