Contact point for 12 volt setup?

Hi guy's, i drive a super series Riviera, model 52 from 1951, 263.3 cubic inch, line 8, system is convertred to 12 volt, contact point was burned, ordered here in Belgium a new one and tell them watch out because ist convertred to 12 volt setup, now it seems they have giving me the wrong one fro a 6 volt setup!!type : DR2236XP standard, is that true?is it for 6 volt setup?so yes, do you now which to order for a 12 volt setup please?it has still the original distributor!already thanks guy's, greetz gunnie

Gunnie, there is no difference between 6 volt or 12 volt points. There is a difference between 6 & 12 volt ignition coils. The difference is that with 12 volts you need an inline resistor. This lowers the voltage going through the ignition coil so the points don't get burnt up like you are experiencing.

Since you gave a Standard Motor Products number for your points, go to same supplier and ask for either Ru10 or Ru11. Ru10 is normal GM and has constant resistance. Use this if you have a resistor bypass wire from the "R" terminal of your starter solenoid. If you don't, use Ru11 which was a Chrysler part with variable resistance: Lower when cold for easier starting, higher resistance (vitually the same as the GM) as it warms up to limit current flow across the points. They also offer a 12V coil (SMP #uc15) with built in resistance, but since you are burning points, I'm sure you dont have it. It also wouldn't offer a bypass for easier starting, so is not the better choice.
