Adding Oil
I have a 41 Buick 320 engine. I just got it running after a long shut down. My 1937 - 1953 Motors Manual says the engine takes 8 quarts of oil. After I put in 4 quarts the dipstick says full. When I run the engine I have 50 lbs of oil pressure. What gives ? Why does the Motors Manual say 8 quarts and the dipstick say 4 is full ?

Engine Oil
Hi,
Did you completely drain the oil from the oil pan, and refill it? I just recently filled my 320 with 8 quarts, and had to add another after starting the engine to replace the quart in the filter. I think you have a dip stick problem. I can't tell you whats wrong from here because I can't see it. You say you started the engine after a long sleep, maybe there's a build up in the pan, check all your options.

Does yours have the oil filter??? If so, the oil filter takes 1 and a half quarts and it doesn't drain out when you drain the sump...andI believe the 8 quarts should be 7...

320 Oil Fill
I had the pan off, it had a hole in it when I got the engine, and I completely cleaned the pan out. The engine does not have an oil filter, for these reasons I am confused why the Motors Manual , 1939 - 1953 Edition, is specifying 8 quarts.

My 263 sure wanted more than 4 quarts. I thought there must be a hole in the pan after 7 I still had to add another couple.

4 quarts of oil
Sounds like you defiantly have a dip stick problem to me. It's too long for that engine, put the other 4 quarts in and mark the dip stick.
