Engine I.D. Help??
Hey Guys..
I have a 1956 Chevy Truck with a Buick Nailhead motor in it. the motor "might" have been pieced together with different parts from different motors, i was hoping for help identifying the motor. i have research some of your posts and here is what i have found so far and questions attached.
the intake casting #1173313, and it has a 4bl on it. from the numbers i have found here that is a 1957 to 61 - 364 intake, right? i measured the distance between the centers of both manifold bolts and it is roughly 8.650" (closer to the 8 7/8 of a 364) if what i understand is correct and this is a 364 intake, it can only fit on a 364 motor, right?
head casting #1196914 is 1963to66 364, right?
block casing #'s that i can find are only up front, top of motor between heads. #4D1136630 faces me looking at in from front of truck and would be on the right side. on left side - upside down is #389229. again, i looked for other numbers between exh. manifold and back of motor and this is all i can find without taking motor out of truck. i will take all the plugs out of it and check stroke at a future date. Also, this motor has a canister oil filter, NOT a spin on/new style filter. which seems to date the short block pre 1959 - am i correct on this?
two other questions for now:
what type of anti-freeze do you recomend?
and, is there a Buick Parts site you guys recommend for buying your engine parts?

Casting numbers would be raised, but I'm guessing the block numbers you list are stamped. 4D1136630 looks like the stamped engine serial, which would match the serial number of the donor car and 389229 looks like the stamped engine sequential number.

4 = Series 40/Special (Specials had a 2 bbl carb)
D = 1957 model year
1 = built at Flint MI
136630 = sequential number, range for Flint was 000989 to 149460

and, Yes the numbers off of the short block were stamped..

1959 is correct for 1st year for the spin-on oil filter.
Regular ethylene glycol-based antifreeze will work fine and was specified originally in the shop manual.
