I have a 1954 Roadmaster that I am beginning to re-restore.I do not know the history of the engine. It appears/sounds to be OK. It has a broken engine mount so I haven't been able to drive it much to determine it's condition. What test or observations can I make to determine the condition of the engine. I bought a compression tester , will this show anything conclusive?
I plan to remove the entire drivetrain in order to clean and paint the undercarriage etc.If I determine the engine is OK what should I do to the engine in way of painting, detailing before replacing into car.

How much do you plan to drive the car? If you are going to use it for an occasional cruise and local meets, you can probably get by with cleaning the engine up and reinstalling it. If you plan on some serious driving, I would at least disassemble the engine and see what it looks like. For the price of a gasket set, you will have the piece of mind that comes from knowing ehat shape it is in.
