What's thing thing between the radiator support and the hood latch bracket -- 1966 4800

About to spot weld the hood latch support back to the radiator support when I found this little flat piece of metal. I pried it away from the radiator support a bit for visibility here. First guess was some sort of body tag but it's right in the way of where the original weld was. And, no stamping. The far end is loose (that's a block of wood next to it) and the near end is tacked to the bracket. What in the world????

I do not know, but it does not look critical. Perhaps it was put in as a shim either at the factory or as a result of some minor adjustment to the rad support maybe due to some mishap. The angle makes it look a little careless during installation.

I have 3 68 skylarks and none of them have that odd piece welded in there, while everything else looks the same.

Thanks. Ground it off, welded the bracket back on and all is well.
