What HEI?

Hi,

New to Buicks, Well versed in Chevy Performance and a regular bracket racer in my street driven 10 second '71 Monte Carlo.

But.......

I just bought a near mint '72 Skylark and was wondering what the recommended HEI setup is. The car is numbers matching, but I would like to drive the HEI but keep the stock distributor unmolested and intact and stored away.

You don't say what engine is in the car. If you have a 350, I would buy an Accel Blueprint HEI- they are basically just a stock reworked unit, but should perform great for you in a basically stock motor.

If you have a 455, you can buy the distributor for the 350 and just swap the drive gear.

Do you know how to wire the HEI to eliminate the resistance wire?

Also, if you get the Accel distributor, you will probably have to either advance the initial timing a few extra degrees, or maybe modify the amount of total mechanical advance. I think the Blueprint only has 22 degrees of mech advance, so if you want to run like 35 total you'll have to run about 13 initial which is more than the factory setting. (But you may like to run 13 initial).

They used to also sell just "standard" replacement HEI distributors, you might be able to find one of those at a local parts store, if they still offer them.

Thanks Bob,

theres my Chevy experience showing, not mentioning the engine as it doesn't matter for the Chevy's. It is a 350 4 bbl for now and thanks for the tip about the drive gear.

On the wire swap, a direct line to battery voltage I presume?

I am very experienced in modifying and designing timing curves with the Chevy distributor, so I am hoping that the approach is the same with the Buick.

Thanks again.

now you wouldn't happen to know where I could get a steel GS Hood?
