V6 225 ID help

Hi, newbie here. I have V6 225 out of a Buick Special (99% certain). It is in a boat (I put it there :bgrin:). I need help identifying the year. The number stamped into the block, just below the cylinder head, driver's side, is:

7H605618

The number cast in the back of the engine, above the flywheel, is:

1381623

Please help with what year engine I have. I thought is was a 1965, maybe a 1967? I need to find the right oil filter for it, and most sites show a different filter for those two years. THANKS

first off, oil filters are very simple things. whenever possible it's usually best to go with the largest filter that will both thread onto the nipple and mate on the gasket surface.

the third consideration is if there's interference around the filter. this might constrain length or diameter.

an example of this that i've done many times is the 97 Ford Probe GT which has a Mazda 2.5L v6 in it. the OEM replacement NAPA Gold filter is #1356 ( 2.685" OD x 3.402" long ). but the 1990 ZR1 Corvette filter fits on the same mount and is MUCH larger, #1324 ( 3.663" OD x 4.354" long ).

being that your engine is now in a boat, it's likely that you've got plenty of extra room around it for the oil filter.

also, the 225ci v6 is actually a member of the Buick small block v8 family and can swap timing covers with the 300, 340 and 350 as well as all of the Land Rover v8s from 1967-2004. obviously, the Land Rover timing covers are going to be threaded in metric. this gives you some flexibility as different timing covers clock the oil filter in different directions.

as to your engine specifically:
7 H 605618
7 = 1967
H = Flint Michigan
605618 = sequential production #, matches the VIN of the car the engine came from

NAPA looks up
for 1967, #FIL 1258 ( 3.66" OD x 4.338" long ).
for 1965, #FIL 1049 ( 3.66" OD x 5.178" long ).
but NAPA also claims for both years that each filter fits any of 6.6 L 400 CID V8, 3.7 L 225 CID V6, 4.9 L 300 CID V8. and the 400ci belongs to the Buick Big Block family in 1967 or is actually the 401ci Nailhead in 1965.

so i'd go with the 1049, just for the extra filter area. unless the filter starts bumping into things, then i'd use the shorter 1258.
 
Not that it's terribly important in this case (or at this late date), but the '138' casting number ID's this as a Kaiser built motor. The GM built motor should be a '134' or a '139' (at least according to the casting info I have).
