Timing question re: this website

I looked through the specs page on this absolutely awesome website, but could not understand why my engine specs for the column "Timing" says "TDC" (Top Dead Center ?) as opposed to a numeral like the other years ?

What should I set the timing to in the gauge located on the crank pulley ?

The specs were taken from Chilton's. I notice that there is a comment refering to "stricter" emissions laws and that specs specific to any particular engine should be in place in the engine compartment.

It sure seems like a pathetic place to start timeing. I would definitly suggest starting with a little more, even if the engine is stock.

I can't believe that they would want 0 degrees timing. I would put about 8 degrees and see how that ran. If that doesn't ping, I would go to 12 degrees and see what happens. I don't think on a stock motor I would go much over that, but you could keep advancing it until it pings, and then back it down two or three degrees and see what happens. I timed an engine that way and actually had it set at 17 degrees and it still didn't ping. However, it would barely start when the motor was warm because it was firing so early that the starter was having trouble spinning it, but boy it sure ran good.

I agree! Especially in those years. A good way using a vacuum gauge is described in the Buicks.net shop.

Thanks all.

The motor is completely stock, and the timing is now at 5 degrees. I just wanted to make sure it was to spec after changing the points, and setting dwell correctly.

Finding manuals on this vehicle is proving difficult in this neck of the woods.

Thank goodness for this website.

If you go to the Books 4 Cars banner on the front of this web board, you will find they have quite a few manuals for the '69 Buick
