Timing instructions inline 8

I am working on a 1932 Buick 57s for my friend that ownes the car . I am reassembling the engine now and I need some help with timing instructions, cam to crank and also correctly installing the distributor . Can anyone help .

Seems like you need one of these,

Engine would be a straight 8 cylinder? I'm guessing it has a chain and timing gears? Not sure about setting that up. Probably the same as later engines. Crank gear and cam gear have marks that should face each other with #1 cylinder at TDC?

Distributor would be easier. You want spark on compression stroke. Remove #1 spark plug. cover the hole with your thumb and slowly bump the engine over until you feel compression. Rotate engine a bit more to line up timing marks and install the distributor so that the rotor is pointing at #1 plug tower of distributor cap.

The engine is a 230 cig straight 8
There is no timing chain just gear

I lined up both marks on the crank gear and cam gear with each other but the piston on number 1 is about an 1 inch down from the top . Thanks for your help I’ll look into this link

That might be TDC for the piston. I wouldn't be surprised if it was that far in the hole. Static compression on those motors was only 4 or 5:1.

Here is the valve timing chart from the '31 Shop Manual. I had the '31 and '33, but not the '32. These don't indicate how to install the timing gears. The '33 version is posted on line here for reference:

Surprisingly there are a lot of small differences among these years.

Also attached are the '31-32 pages from a '33 Chilton's flat rate manual showing a procedure for checking the valve timing using a feeler gage on a tappet and the timing mark on the flywheel. The timing mark is in a slightly different place on the '32 vs. '31. The '32 instructions are incomplete, but should be the same as the '31 except for timing mark position and flywheel tooth count. Here are the pages from the '31 Shop Manual showing how to set up the distributor timing. These instructions should be good for '32 as well. An old parts book shows both years use a Delco Remy 660-L distributor having dual points.
