Shop Manual for 48s and 49s

A period shop manual covering 48s and 49s came with our purchase of the 49 Super. It does not cover the Dynaflow transmission, but seems to cover everything else.

If anyone needs data from it, I'll be happy to oblige. I don't dare photocopy because the spine is too old --57 years--to flatten pages, but I'll be able to transcribe, and in some instances may be able to photograph pages and send the pictures e-mail.

Bernard,
There is a separate manual on the Dynaflow for the 48's, 49's and I think the 50 models. These can be found on eBay fairly easily. Watch to make sure you don't get the edition for the 48 models only. It won't cover your car exactly.

To reciprocate on your offer, I have the 48 version and the later one in case you need any info forwarded right away. Too, if you will send me your e-mail by private message (or here while disguising the 'at' sign), I will send the magazine articles on the 49 Buicks I promised earlier.

On your speed/mileage errors, those seem pretty large even allowing for 1949 technology. Do you think the car is running with extra large tires compared to the originals? Or with a non-original lower numerical ratio rear axle?

The record of your journey was most enjoyable to read. All in all it appears you knew more than any of us did about what you were getting into with the cross-country drive.

Thanx for the leads on the Dynaflow books.

The tires are L78-15s, and the spare is an 8.00x15. I have no idea how this compares to original sizes.

As far as gear ratios, I dunno. I'm seeing more and more little things about the car each time I look at it, and I'm wondering if it had a color chage from red to maroon, and if the rear end got wrecked. The first owner is said to have had a bad stroke, leading to the car sitting idle for 40 years. Maybe he had it while driving. . . .

I BEAT!!! I beat everyone. I purchased in Nürburgring (Germany) last year in the great "Oldtimer Speed Weekend"'s grass market the book:
"Series X, X, X & X Buick TUNING instructions"
:D It's the biggest I have right now.
Yes, same of all of you, it's at your (any) neccesities.
Thanks to all pf you

Bob,

I've ordered the tranny book -- thank you. They're out of stock at present but say they have some on order. I hope it's soon--Harley Earle is incontinent and losing a quart of tranny fluid through the ball whatchamacallit a day. I've got an excellent mechanic down here who can fix anything he has proper information about. Maybe I can get the book before the ball descends--to the pavement.
