revised engine hard to turn over

Nice, now it should work..
Don't be scared about a rough running Engine at the first couple of Hours ..,its normal for an fresh rebuild Engine with the many Internal resistance.
You have installed a pertronix ignitor 1 Ignition ?...
I can highly recommend it.
The SMP points and condenser are you can buy at this Days, are Chinese Junk !.., and let you ride in Problems with this "new" parts.
Especially the point gap is changing all the times.

I wish you good Luck with first start of your Engine and the brake in.
I think ,you was in Seeland ?..
I like the Netherlands, and the relaxed people there, especially Camp-vacation at the north sea coast area.
My Son has a dutch Name too.
Yes ,I'm in the near of Bremen, in Syke 15 km south- east of Bremen,
Greetings Jenz

Hi Jenz,
I wonder what the name of your son is? I was born and raised near the coast but now live near the german border.
I have the orginal distribution set up. The parts do not seem chinese, but I will take your warning at hart and make sure they work fine. Currently not much time for the car, but I hope that I can start up for the first time in spring.
schone weihnachten und ein gutes neujahr

Points get a bad rapp. IF the proper regular distributor maintenence is performed at least on a yearly basis they should give you the proper amount of time expected from them. IT IS the maintenence that MOST forget about epecially lubing the rubbing block. Then dwell & timing will very seldom change. From the beginning of time points have served as the foundation up until the 70's when electronic ignition came out.
How did those in the past count up trillions of miles with them???? There would have been no trips further than the end of town.
As an example I used points in my car, the same set, for over 45 years with NO PROBLEMS. It's all about maintenence.
AND, just because some kind of electronic ignition has been installed the distributor still requires MAINTENENCE at least yearly.
IF something goes wrong with points cleaning will usually get you home. With electronic IF you don't carry an extra set of points & cndenser your out of luck as it's usually the module that goes bad AND unless you have an extra module there you sit on the side of the road until help arrives or the car gets towed home.
Just my thoughts.

Tom is probably right. I lean the other way. I have run an HEI on my straight for several years. Only problems have been self imposed. I carry an extra module.
The industry changed from points to electronic after seventy years or so. Electronic has now been around for 50 or so. One just has to choose what one likes.

Tom, you're absolutly right ...with the good old stock Material...,I had the same experience.
The old stock parts are much more durable than the new stuff.
I'm a professional mechanic since more than 35 years, have my own shop and had never had so much problems with the ignition stuff like the last 5-8 years.
I own my 38 Coupe since 16 years and in the first 10 years I had thinking like you with the points (and condenser)
But all 3-500 miles again I must gaping their new..,(I have a fine feeling for this ) the engine runs rougher then, you know what i mean..
Then after long time of go pregnant with it, I switched over to the pertronix, and since then, much better idling and also in higher Revs (4-5000)the Motor runs much more powerfull (no flying points) and i never had any problems with the Ignition system.
Every customer car, (US cars only from the pre catalytic Converter time) that will need a tune up I put in a pertronix and they (and me ;-) never had any failure with their Ignition systems.
If I would find any nos ignition parts for my 38 I would grab it ,only because I wanna have it for spare in my trunk.
It's the same here with german stuff.., a new Bosch Coil (made in Brasil) isn't the same quality like an nos Bosch Blue or Red Coil.
I prefer to every customer that when, they look only for this nos parts Made in Germany..nothing else.
The old point sets in the old blister packaging also , buy it.
With the Condenser.., the same thing.
5 Years ago i bought a new point set for my 71 BMW Motorcycle from a qualified BMW Garage.. ,it came in a white packaging, and one week after installing it, one time you guess what's happened ?.. my first breakdown with it.
At home the old points and condenser pull out of my junk box, clean it up an put it in again..,since then, i never had any problems.
That's my experiences..

Duco ,my sons name is Henk ;-)

Hi Jenz,
Yes that is a good old Dutch name!
RE your explanation. I wonder, I have all the classic stuff which I bought around 2005. I had the impression that it was all good (NOS). I hope to first start my engine in next spring. I will keep the pertronics set up in mind. Any advice on that? Which one, how to install? etc. I Wanted original approach so all is 6 V ( negative earth). If I look and the importers site, they only seem to provide 12v for 8 cylinders) (correction: They do have the 6v Negative, sorry)

Happy new year to you all..
Yes, of course you use your classic stuff.
Think about to clean the points before first starting with a clean rag or pull a strip of Paper thru the closed points it After this long time of sitting its possible that the surfaces have pitting on it.
Your distributior is in good shape?..
Shaft bearings have no play ?
vacuum can and the Weights are working correctly?

Also give a little fresh Bosch Grease onto the lobes for lubricate the plastic of the points.
If all this is done ,you will have no problems with the Ignition at the first start.

Happy new year everybody!
Thanks Jenz, will do that, Only point I am not sure about is the vacuum advance. That I will need to check later. THe unit is NOS, but the vacumm pipe/line was soldered. I checked but it could be leaking.

One thing I didn't mentionis the type of lube I use which is Kenall Super Blue. Comes in a cartrige or tube. It CAN BE USED for points because it has NO GRAPHITE in it as well as wheel bearing grease. It holds it's consistency for YEARS. When you check your wheel bearings after 5 or more years it will be the same as when you 1st. greased the bearings.
You will find more uses for it as time goes on & you get more comfortable after using it.

Thanks Tom,
Will check if it is for sale here in the Netherlands. Seems usefull. I wanted something as a super grease.
Is is also Blue?
It is not the stuff that is blue and specifically for brake assembly?

PS: did some research: there are many high quality greases for ball bearing, many Lith based, EP etc. At no site did I find remarks about the grahite contents ( not even at Kenall ( but I may have overlooked)). Seems that only way to get it here is thru Amazon, but will look around bit more. Thanks Tom

The main reason I use it & have been using it for 30-35 years is because it's not thick like normal wheel bearing grease. That's why IF you do start usng it I could almosr guarantee you will be impressed & will start using it on EVERYTHING. Just buy a small cartridge just to try. I know it maybe slightly more costly than other greases you can buy, BUT I'm sure you'll be happy with it so much so that you will start recommending it to others.

Just my nickels worth.
