Remove/adjust steering wheel

Ben,

front end is aligned (steering geometry), car drives/brakes perfectly. So in order to get the wheel straight, you first try to re-set (turn) the wheel to get the offset minimal (or even straight) and after that do the finetuning by adjusting the front end/steering links.

Thats why I'm asking...

Cheers,
Harry

Bonjour,

Hello,
If the front alignment is correct, it is possible that the rear is not on the axis ...
I have been an alignment adjuster and have often found this problem. The steering rods must be corrected a little on the left wheel ... a little on the right wheel, until the steering wheel is aligned.

That is beautiful wheel, most are terribly cracked and shrunk open. I think if your feel under the wheel, you will find 4 screw in holes. remove them.

The wheel moves on splines on the column, but is very rarely where you will want to do the adjustment there because it moves a long way.
Larry's advise is good. The people who did the alignment should have adjusted the wheel at the time.

For the back yard mechanic to do it, you would:
-drive the car straight on a concrete surface (like into your shop)
-measure your toe in carefully and right it down. Note the position of the steering wheel.
-loosen the clamp on the right and left steering tube clamps
-turn one in and one out 1/4 turn. Note how it has moved the wheel and make further adjustments as necessary
-check the toe in and tighten clamps. remember if you lift the car, you will have to get it sitting properly on it's suspension again to correctly measure the toe in.

To do ANY alignment properly you ALWAYS do a 4 wheel alignment. This puts the relationship of the rear wheels into play so the end result is a properly positioned steering wheel even though there is NO rear adjustment. Your going off the therectcal center of the rear wheels in relationship to the fronts.
Just my nickels worth.
