Hello from Germany.

I am a owner of a 1968 Buick Secial Deluxe Station Wagon (5.7 4bbl). After a axle damage (broken rear axle on the left side) I need a axle shaft left (28 spline).
Is somebody there who have any idea where I can buy a old or new axle shaft?
Thank you for your support.

Best regards
Daniel from Chemnitz/Germany

Daniel, your car could have been built with 3 different types of rear axle assembly. Rear axles built by the Buick division have 10 bolts on the differential cover. Some late 1968 cars were built with 1969 Buick rear axle assemblies. Ball bearings are used on the '68-style axle shaft. Tapered roller bearings are used on the '69-style axle shaft. Could you obtain the rear axle code letters from the axle housing per the attached page from the shop manual?

Axles built by the Chevrolet division have 12 bolts on the cover. I don't think your car uses this type of axle assembly, but there is some chance it does.

Is it possible to read the part number on the Bearing? I'm not sure if the Special Wagons got the heavier duty axle which would have a different bearing than the standard. I have a 2.78: 1 assembly here from a 68 coupe that I could possibly take apart and compare.
If it matches I would be willing to ship it to you.

I also have a rear from a 69 GS- again it may be different, these cars have 50 years of people owning and fixing them-sometimes with non standard parts!

Thanks a lot for your replys. I have checkt the rear axle and the left brak drum. It was not possible to identify a number. The axle shaft has a ball bearing. So it could be the 68 axle. I send a picture of my broken axle shaft with all dimensions. The diameter of the axle for bearing should be 1.378" because all new bearings has i inner diameter of 1,378''. Is somebody (Ted Nagel) there you has such a axle shaft for me?

Here is a page from the parts book which decodes the Protect-O-Plate and gives the axle types. Your axle type is LB which is a 1968-design using ball bearings (which we already know).

For the A body cars, only the Sportwagon and GS 400 use the heavy-duty axle bearing GM no 907884 (bearing industry no RW507GR). The plate shows your car is a model 43435, which is not a Sportwagon. So it uses the standard duty bearing GM no 907682 (industry no RW507CR).
