oil pressure too high

started car this morning to warm it up, 5 minutes later a big puddle of oil under car. took to a mechanic, hes put 3 oil filters on it and the pressure is blowing past the oil filter gasket. its a2006 buick Lucern,6 cyl. what could cause the oil pressue to be that high to do this?

Sounds like the pressure relief valve is stuck. The relief valve is supposed to regulate the maximum pressure the pump makes, around 70 psi.

The relief valve is on the right in the above picture. The pressure relief spring and valve is behind the oil filter cover/nipple assembly. You can see it at 3:26 of this video,

The valve is probably stuck.

Hi Larry, thanks for the advice, I bought a new relief valve from the dealer and had my mechanic put it in and it seemed to have solved the problem. The question I have is about a week leading up to the oil leak through the oil filter gasket and immediatly after putting high test in the evening before, the next morning the car would hardly start and would not rev up without cutting out until it warmed up, then everything was fine. i took it to my mechanic and he put an analyzer on it and said it was misfiring, but could not pin it down, eventually he said it could be the computer or throttle body, but I took it home and just let it warm up every morning before driving it until the morning I notice 3 quarts of oil had blown out. the oil senser has 3 wires coming from it one that leads to the computer, is it possible that the oil pressure from the relief valve was acting up causing it to not run when first started due to communicating with the computer? Cause after the relief valve was replaced the problem with it not staying running until warm, went away. Yor thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill
