oil and fuel treatments

hello. my 52 special straight 8 makes the hard rapping noise associated with lifters (so does my 63 chevy straight 6, and my friends 58 ford straight 6). i have read that this can also be caused by carbon buildup in the cylinders. there are many products on the market that claim to quiet noisy lifters reduce carbon buildup ect. i have also read that fuel and oil aditives with detergents can be bad for old cars because they free up a bunch of crap that just cause problems elsewhere. what is the general belief about oil and fuel additives and detergents with old cars? any suggestions on where to find info?
thanks,

The first order of business is to lash the valves to make sure that it is not just an adjustment problem. If after a valve adjustment, the noise is still presant, then you can think about carbon build up.

As far as Oil supplements go, I would stick to the Engine Oil Supplement put out by GM... just go to any GM Dealer parts counter. Similarly, I wouldn't waste my time with Fuel Additives designed to clean the engine. I would go and pick up a product called "Cleens" that you spray into the carb, again, put out by GM and at your local dealership.

as far as the buick, i haven't gotten to adjusting the lash. i did on the chevy last weekend (i'm getting it ready to sell for buick money) and it didn't help the noise. it's running well but carbon fouls plugs quickly. i just want to be able to sell it with confidence. i helped my friend adjust the lash on his 58 ford this weekend but it didn't seem to quiet anything either. thanks for your responses and keep the info flowing.
