Need some help, want to test run a 425. How can it be done with out the Transmission on it.

You just need to the starter and ring gear. It is nice to have an engine test stand, but many people run their motors on the floor, or even on their test stand. Depending on how long you wish to run it, you will have to consider a water source or a radiator. for cooling. I like to run them for at least a half hour to break in new cams and check for leaks. I also rig a set of mufflers so you can hear the motor.

 
Without a transmission you will have to get creative in supporting the back of the engine. A V-8 engine makes torque. Your engine stand has to be strong enough to handle it. I tipped a 283 Chev engine over once on a poorly constructed engine stand.

The torque converter has the gear on it for the starter. I have made a test stand / eng. storage stand, but can not use it if the transmission. I have to put them together and run them together.

Without the trans's main shaft keeping the torque converter rotor on center its gonna need some stoppem' from floppin'. The best bet would be to fix a used trans main shaft (and pump drive shaft) into the TC. Damage and a TON of balance issues will ensue otherwise. No other nailhead guys have made something like this before? Even for dyno use, its gotta be an important "must have" tool. The other alternative is a manual flywheel. Are the nailheads internally balanced? Bill

I guess I did it wrong, but it worked well, I did not mount the torque converter. The engine balancing external, and is done on the ring gear.
