Folks, I have "hopped up" a 263. Bored, new pistons, re-ground cam, head work with larger valves, new springs, etc. I am having a problem with the hydraulic lifters. I used the cam that came in the engine, which is hydraulic lifter equipped.

Problem is the lifters will not stay pumped up. Oil pressure is 40 lbs and all orifices and galleys were cleaned well. I have even sprung for new lifters. No better than old ones. She sounds like a thrashing machine!

I am awaiting communication with the cam grinder, who has been on vacation. Hopefully next week.

I will listen to all, but am especially interested in info from any one who has built a 263 with hydraulics. Did you have problems? What was done to correct problem? Are the new springs too stiff?

Thanks

Ben

What is your lifter preload? those are adjustable rockers correct? how did you adjust them?

Also did you soak the new lifters before installing?

All hydraulic lifters from the 50's to 2000's work the same- you need oil pressure and the correct amount of preload. if your oil pressure to the lifters is good, and the lifters are in good shape, it sounds like your preload is off.

When they re-grind cams, they make the base lobe smaller to give more lift to the eccentric part of the lobe. This could be contributing to the problem. but the rocker arms should have an adjustment to compensate.
