how well can a 455 run with stock manifolds? if you read my other post am planing on installing 455 in apollo and stock manifolds my be my only choice. was just wondering were the limits on this will be. would it be possible to run in the 11's??? goal 11's on the motor and 10's on the bottle. any ideas??? thanks

Why are the 10's a magic number in your case? To put an X-Body in the 10's you will have to do a tremendous amount of body/sub-frame mods to stengthen it. The rear will have to be greatly modified to take tires/slicks that can get you into the 10's.

In your previous post there was talk of transplanting a Camero/Firebird front sub into the x-body. In my humble oppinion, it would be cheaper and safer to forget the x-body.

This is NOT a bolt in deal. Everything it would take to put this combo together is weld and fabricate. Unless you are real experienced at this, the vehicle will be unsafe at any speed. Why not just find another body with a frame? This would be the better option. There are a lot of Skylarks out there.

Having said that, I see no reason why you can't do it,IF, the rest of the engine/trans/rear are up to what it would take to put that body into the 10's, AND it meets NHRA safety requirements for that speed. This is an expensive project.

A full cage will also be necessary. That engine will be bending/twisting the body everywhere. It is also required by all sanctioning bodies for a car that runs 130 MPH. This is not a streetable combo.

Greg Gessler ports exhaust manifolds to flow almost as well as headers, but it will cost almost as much as headers. The procedure involves cutting the manifolds in half, porting the inside, welding them back together and finishing them so that you would never know it. He can be reached in NJ at:

Greg is the winner of the Year One Stock Appearing Fast Shootout for the last two years in a row. This is even more amazing when you consider he races an early 70s Buick GS against the hemi powered Mopars and LS6 equipped Chevys.
These cars must use stock equipment that can be massaged. Greg specializes in porting Buick heads and manifolds. He has been long respected within the GSCA, and he ported the 455 heads for my race car. I had absolutely no complaints. He is a nice guy on top of that!
