Finally own a Buick A body

Howdy Folks,

New to the forum. I've always wanted a '70 Buick GSX since I was a kid. Once I became aware of what an original GSX goes for, I had to recalibrate expectations. Ideally the next candidate is a GS, but those too are far out of my reach, so I began the pursuit of purchasing a Skylark. After 23yrs of saving and searching, I bought my first Buick A body, a 71 Skylark Custom.

It was originally a 350 automatic AC car, but had several owners each with a different vision of what it could be. By the time I purchased it, it has a 455 and a 4spd muncie (my ideal dream powertrain) and a ford 9" rear. One of the previous owners swapped in the 455 and 9" with intentions of drag racing it, and started gutting the car. The guy i bought it from wanted a driver, so be put interior back in and swapped the automatic for the muncie. He wasn't a buick enthusiast, so he put a mixture of aftermarket and chevelle interior parts in the car.

Since I've acquired it, I've been attempting to get the interior back to "mostly stock" interior, with intent on creating a GSX clone. I want this car to be a fun driver, I have no intentions of a full restoration due to cost and the fact I'd be afraid to drive it if it was pristine. Most of the parts I've installed are either from a junkyard or a good friend of mine who's been incredibly generous, giving me many parts and charging very little for the parts I've purchased from him. I wouldn't be able to make this dream come true, especially at the pace I've been moving, if it wasn't for him.

I've been fortunate to meet several buick folks in my area who've been tremendous help, both technical support as well has helping me source parts. I've even had the pleasure of meeting Dennis Mannor after I discovered I live only a few miles away from him.

Some of the harder to find/expensive interior parts I've made myself, attempting to keep as much of the OEM design in mind. I'll share some pictures later of where the car is today and how it was when I purchased it. Needless to say I'm incredibly blessed to have finally purchased my dream car and be able to meet so many incredible buick enthusiasts in my area.

This is what the car looked like when I bought it last year. Fiberglass "GS" hood, GSX spoiler, bunch of aftermarket interior pieces with some Chevelle parts, and obviously the multi-colored body. Fortunately the car has minimal rust. The only rust I found is the typical rot around the rear glass. It was "repaired" previously via riveted sheet metal and way too much bondo. I've having that repaired correctly later this year. Otherwise, a clean car.

This is what the car looks like today. I haphazardly painted GSX stripes down the side (without the pinstripe). A 70 skylark showed up in a local junkyard so I grabbed the bumpers, headlight bezels and grille and swap those on. They're really beat up and rusty but the 70 styling is so much better in my opinion than 71 that I was willing to sacrifice the worse condition for the styling. The car overall has a beater appearance so I guess they fit the car for now. Additionally, I've put Buick 15" rallys on with 70 center caps, a hood tach, and sport mirrors.

For the interior, I put in 70 deluxe panels (HUGE thanks to my Buick friends who graciously gave me the panels!!!) and 71 Cutlass seats that I hope to reupholster someday with Buick seat covers. Additionally, since my car is a 4 speed but has the shifter centered rather than offset as it should be, I made a Buick style consolette, but put a 3 gauge pod at the top rather than the single pod that housed a buick emblem. Also made a shorty center console with OEM buick design cues, but added cup holders. Lastly, I found an original sport wheel that I installed, with a reproduction Buick horn button.

Under the hood, the 455 has an edelbrock intake which means a factory GS aircleaner wouldn't fit. In addtion to that issue, my hood is fiberglass so it doesn't have the provisions for the GS hood scoops anyways. So I made a GS style aircleaner to fit my hood, along with the hood scoops. I've done a few road tests this year and it's held up great so far. Looking forward to more on-road testing this year! I haven't painted it or added the stickers yet because I want to fully validate the design before I do the finish work.

Lastly, please ignore the filth on the car in the pictures. Been working on it and it's gotten dirty, haven't had a chance to give it a proper clean and wax!
