Any one convert from Steering wheel gear shift to gear shift directly on the manual transmission??

Hello! I building a straight 16 engine (2 x 248 Buick (38-40) and it runs fine. I want to shift gear directly on the transmission. That is not problem, but the shifting from one gear to another gear then the shift is way too long. Any one done it and have a solution for a shorter shift angle?
