Hi Team,
I have a 73 Buick Centurion 4 door hardtop that I brought with me to NZ from Australia.

My car is right hand drive however, when it was converted, they ran a bar type arrangement (chain and cog setup) across the firewall linking into the steering arm and steering box which is located on the left hand side of the vehicle. While it was legal in Australia, NZ won't comply my car until all steering is direct to a right hand steering box. Would very much appreciate any ideas re getting...

See if any of this helps,

Awesome Larry. Very much appreciated.😊

Is a RHD rack & pinion available for the Centurion? They're not cheap, but I've seen them available for quite a few American cars.

Hi there Team, Hope all is well in your part of the world. I sourced a HQ power steering box for the buick but now looking to source a complete (new) steering column as the one in the car was cut short for the conversion!! which is illegal here in NZ. Ive hunted high and low to get the measurement from the top of the steering column shroud to the shaft but havent found it anywhere despite extensive internet research. I have been advised that either Ididit or Flaming river is acceptable here in New Zealand but not chinese made. Your thoughts and recommendations? I have been looking at Flaming river, which come in 28, 30, 33 and 35 length wise, hence me wanting to know what the measurements for an original 73 Buick Centurion 4 door hard top steering column. All responses very much appreciated. Cheers Jim

I understand my Buick is an (A body) so looked up steering columns with that and only Mopar came up with A body?? Man im confused!!

No, your 73 Buick Centurion is not an A body, it's a B body.
Thanks Larry, very much appreciate you clarifying that for me. Would you know what the measurements are for the original steering column by chance so I know which length I require for a refit?

Virtually any column from the 1971 thru 1976 B, C and D body GM lineup should fit that car. These were the very first full size GM's built with complete body uniformity throughout the lineups. The era of different suspension and other designs were over only the engines remained independent and that was done with by '76. If your old enough you may remember the "GM built engines from various divisions" lawsuits.

Thanks for the info, ofog,
Very much appreciated.

Do you know where I might source a relatively good complete steering column by chance; I'm wanting to change it to a floor auto so wouldn't need the selector on the column. Any thoughts appreciated....

No I don't know of any sorry, neither here nor in your part of the world. Sadly the majority of vehicles that age have returned to the earth here due to corrosion.
The only suggestion I can give is to explore the auto recyclers in the southwestern US. Vehicles last forever out there and cars of this vintage can still be found.
I also can't say that I've ever seen any 71-76 full size GM car with a factory floor shifter here in the US. However it shouldn't be too difficult to set up a cable operated floor shifter and remove the shifter arm from the column.

FYI We have a Cadillac column in our '73 LeSabre. I *think* it is from a '76 Fleetwood, but perhaps that will give some more possibilities to investigate.

Thanks ogog, I would have stayed with the original set up but unfortunately the conversion to rhd looks a little messy with steel rods running across the inside of the dash to make the auto column linkage to the gearbox work. Floor change will be much simpler, then I can get rid of the excess clutter under the dash!!
