73 air cleaner lid

Hello all. New owner of my first Riviera here, a one owner 73 Boattail. I believe this car to be very original but questioned the air cleaner lid. All I've seen are black, this one is stainless. Would this of been factory? I was thinking about painting it and putting a new decal on it if not.

Thanks!

The '73 Riviera did come with a chrome air cleaner lid as standard equipment.

Thanks Todd. Even for a non stage 1 car? I've been told by others that the chrome lid was available as a dealer option on non stage 1 cars, but would of had a stage 1 decal on it, not the 455-4 decal.

Alan,
I think what you were told about the black lid on non-Stage I '73 Rivieras is correct.

The parts list I have threw me a curve by making it look like the '72-73 Chrome E body Air Cleaner & Silencer assembly no 6487177 came on all Rivieras. After reading closer, I see the 6487179 regular (black) cleaner assy was used on E bodies. See Group 3.402 listings attached for more details.

The chrome lid no 6484052 under Group 3.410 also appeared to be used on all Rivieras, but that was not so. It must have been a popular accessory. Later catalogs show it for use on '68-76 Rivieras. It was not discontinued until 12/90.

This lengthy post from an AACA forum contains a '73 Riviera Stage I window sticker. It confirms the chrome air cleaner came with the Stage I package. Was not able to confirm if a Stage I sticker was used on the chrome lid or not.

Thanks for the info Todd. The 73 I just bought has a nearly mint chrome lid. Looks brand new. I have a guy who’s doing a GS clone wanting to trade me a black one. I just didn’t want to trade mine away if it was original to the car. Without a build sheet I’m going to assume at this point that it isn’t, since this isn’t a stage 1 car based on the VIN.
